Barbara Moura

(b. 1989)

Lives and works in Vienna

Barbara Moura is known for her self-portrait paintings. The focus of her figurative work revolves around the female experience and the female gaze. Her work often includes appropriations of pieces from old masters and explores themes such as vulnerability, empowerment, oppressive systems, and world events, personalised through the use of self-portraits or self-staging, offering a challenging and reflective examination of the female condition. Through her distinctive aesthetic, characterised mostly by big format self-portraits with bold backgrounds, she often interpolates the use of ‘darkness’ as a metaphor with a vibrant colour pallet and strong figures, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of the self as an ever changing ground of growth and shifting identities. Barbara Moura received her BA in Film from the National Film School in Portugal in 2011 and her MA (Distinction) from Central Saint Martins, London, UK, in 2014. Her academic journey between mediums laid the groundwork for a practice deeply rooted in both fields, bringing a cinematic point of view to her paintings.
