Sarah Mühlbacher

The central theme in my work is the familiar. The works give insights into scenes of private, everyday life – walks, living rooms, the bathroom, the view from the window. Images are permeated by elements that disrupt the homely composition – bright spotlights in the darkness, shadows and sharp edges that cut out elements, or the reflection of a figure‘s gaze in a window. My artistic practice consists primarily of watercolor and oil painting. I refer to photographs that I take in my private environment and therefore use as a reference for painting. As a starting point, I examine the reference photography intently and then paint my observations in many overlapping, translucent layers of color. Working focused and slowly painting in layers is particularly important for me, as I can immerse myself in the mood captured in the photographic snapshot during the ongoing painting process. At the same time, I look at the details and structures of the various elements and figures in the picture analytically, where I distance myself emotionally from my surroundings. The resulting painting is a reconstruction of a moment that is photographic in appearance, but which also seems slightly distorted and alien.
