According to Maurice Denis’s incisive definition that painting is, first and foremost, a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order, its stillness remains an inherent quality. Even when capturing movement or action, painting petrifi es a single moment of the process, transforming it into a sustained, mute, and immobile representation. Yet a different transformation permeates Andrea Luzi’s distinctive practice as he puts the eternal cosmic change and ruckus between matter and energy at the center of 8, his Vienna solo debut with Barvinskyi Art Gallery.

Carrying a rich tapestry of meanings and symbolism across cultures, religions, and esoteric traditions, 8 is commonly associated with balance, infinity, abundance, and cosmic order. In some traditions, it symbolizes the intersection between the visible and invisible worlds, making it a perfect ideogram for the continuous dissolution of spirit and matter into one another. Set in the post-Autumn Equinox seasonal shift in September in Vienna, Luzi’s 8 replaces the city’s imperial, classical, and highly polished surface with the pagan traditions of the surrounding alpine hinterland. Curated by Croatian-born Saša Bogojev, the Austrian solo debut of the Italian artist nods at the parallels between his approach and the raw energy of European ancestral rituals such as the Alpine Perchten, the Mediterranean Mamuthones, and the Balkan Zvončari.
