Between States

Introduction

Between States explores the moment in which one state passes into another. The space between fear and courage, sleep and wakefulness, presence and absence, becoming and disappearance. Psychologically, this in between states can be understood as a threshold at which perception and emotion begin to shift. Quantum physics offers no scientific explanation for this experience, but rather a conceptual resonance: in superposition, multiple possible states can coexist before one particular state manifests. Translated into Between States, the space in between is therefore not an absence, but a space of possibility. What state is this thing in right now?

The exhibition brings together painting and sculpture in an exploration of perception, time, space, and transformation. Familiar forms lose their fixed function. Orientation becomes unstable, time escapes measurement, and emptiness acquires volume. An object can be present while simultaneously being detached from its original meaning. What is absent can become as present as what physically remains.

Johanna Lakner's paintings follow the same principle. Lines, bodies, and forms do not appear as fixed entities, but as temporary constellations. They overlap and permeate one another, emerge and dissolve again. Figure and ground, memory and projection, reality and imagination remain in constant motion.

The hypnagogic state, the fragile threshold between wakefulness and sleep, provides another point of departure. Here, familiar structures momentarily lose their stability. Images emerge before they are consciously formed. Perception moves between external reality and internal projection. What is still real and what is already imagined can exist alongside one another. Between States therefore asks less what a state is than when it ceases to be one thing and begins to become another. The between is not an empty space. It is a state in its own right. A space of no longer and not yet, in which opposites and possibilities can, for a moment, coexist.
