Locus Iste

Maximiliano León

05 Sep - 17 Oct 2025

With this exhibition, León unveils a new body of work that reflects his ongoing investigation into identity, historical legacies, and cultural exchange. For the first time, his practice incorporates a strong autobiographical dimension, revisiting his own family origins as a source of imagery and meaning. The title, Locus Iste—Latin for “this place”—underscores the artist’s meditation on belonging, heritage, and memory.

León’s paintings—portraits, landscapes, and still lifes—juxtapose Mexican and Austrian references, bridging past and present while questioning inherited narratives. His works examine the intersections of colonial history, globalization, and personal lineage, offering viewers layered perspectives on the construction of identity across time and culture.
